National Day of Truth and Reconciliation
September 30th marks the third official National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This day is an opportunity for those of us on Haida Gwaii and throughout Canada and BC to recognize and reflect on the lasting impact of colonial history, raise awareness of the historical injustices and honour those who didn’t make it home, the survivors and their families.
September 30th is also Orange Shirt Day which is an Indigenous-led grassroots commemorative day intended to promote the concept of “Every Child Matters”. The orange shirt is a symbol of the stripping away of culture, freedom and self-esteem experienced by Indigenous children over generations.
We stand together on this significant occasion of Truth and Reconciliation Day, recognizing the importance of acknowledging the truths of the past to build a better future. HGSCP employees will be volunteering their time and efforts in various community events aimed at fostering understanding, healing, and support.
